Vibe welcomes visiting Teaching Artist Hans Barklis for a series of wonderful music classes reflecting some of our rich and varied culture here in Portland!

Mondays 7-8pm: Capoeira for teens and adults.

Capoeira​ ​is​ ​a​ ​physical,​ ​musical,​ ​community​ ​game.​ ​Originally​ ​a​ ​martial​ ​art developed​ ​by​ ​African​ ​slaves​ ​in​ ​NE​ ​Brazil​ ​and​ ​hidden​ ​from​ ​slave​ ​masters​ ​as a​ ​dance,​ ​today​ ​capoeira​ ​incorporates​ ​a​ ​variety​ ​of​ ​kicks,​ ​dodges,​ ​acrobatics, music,​ ​and​ ​ritual​ ​into​ ​a​ ​community​ ​celebration​ ​that​ ​is​ ​challenging, engaging,​ ​and​ ​rewarding!  This class is for adults or teens 14 years and older. Students​ ​will​ ​have​ ​the​ ​opportunity​ ​to​ ​explore​ ​interlocking​ ​polyrhythms​ ​in​ ​the context​ ​of​ ​Cuban​ ​Rumba,​ ​connect​ ​to​ ​folk​ ​songs​ ​and​ ​melodies​ ​from​ ​around the​ ​Caribbean,​ ​and​ ​discover​ ​their​ ​own​ ​unique​ ​songwriting​ ​expressions within​ ​these​ ​rich​ ​traditions.

Wednesdays 10-10:50 a.m. :: Pre-K Tiny Music Around the World in Spanish & English  ::  Starting November 8th for 4 weeks

Pre-K​ ​students​ ​and​ ​their​ ​grownups​ ​explore​ ​a​ ​different​ ​geo-cultural​ ​theme every​ ​term​ ​through​ ​instruments,​ ​folk​ ​songs,​ ​folk​ ​movement​ ​and​ ​dance,​ ​and art​ ​projects.​ ​This​ ​time​ ​we’ll​ ​be​ ​exploring​ ​Afro-Latinamerica.

Cada​ ​término​ ​los​ ​pequeños​ ​y​ ​sus​ ​adultos​ ​descubren​ ​un​ ​nuevo​ ​tema geocultural​ ​a​ ​través​ ​de​ ​instrumentos,​ ​cantos,​ ​movimiento​ ​y​ ​danza,​ ​y proyectos​ ​de​ ​arte.​ ​Esta​ ​vez​ ​exploramos​ ​Afrolatinoamérica.
